D-String® + D-TE™ – custom solution to stop open trailing edge
Challenge
A 1.5 MW wind turbine with 34 m blades, commissioned in 2003, was experiencing open trailing edges. The operator sought stronger blades with higher resistance tolerances and aimed to extend the operational life of existing blades by an additional 10 years.
Solution
Our team provided a technical opinion and root cause analysis, applying D-String® to 12 blades and D-TE™ to 12 blades. The interventions reinforced the existing blades to withstand ongoing operational stresses and achieve the desired lifetime extension.
Impact
The solution reduced operational and maintenance costs and made a 10-year lifetime extension feasible. Based on the successful results, the solution was planned to be installed on additional turbines in 2020–2021, supporting long-term reliability and performance.
