What you will learn
After completing the course, you will be able to:
- Understand wind turbine blades from a structural perspective
- Apprehend loads on blades under different field operation conditions
- Classify structural blade damages and understand the risk of each type
- Gain a basic understanding of blade design and testing philosophy
- Learn inspection methods and how to use resulting data effectively
Course modules (high-level overview)
- Structural overview of wind turbine blades – Blade design, regions, structural components and materials
- Structural failure modes – Common failure types such as peeling, buckling, twisting, interlaminar failures and more
- Damage analysis – Statistics, case studies and possible solutions
- Certification and testing – Field, full-scale, sub-component testing and non-destructive testing (NDT)
- Leading edge erosion (LEE) – Damage categorisation, driving factors and protection solutions
- Lightning protection systems (LPS) – Design, certification and protection zones
- Operation & maintenance (O&M) – Inspection strategies, risk-based maintenance, end-of-warranty considerations
